Introduction to Our Mixed-Age Bilingual Class

Our Learning Community

Our class brings together Nursery to Year 2 pupils in a warm, nurturing mixed-age environment. Children learn alongside and from one another, developing confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging. As a bilingual setting, we value and promote both Welsh and English, ensuring that every child experiences rich language opportunities throughout the day.

Welsh Immersion

Each morning is dedicated to Welsh-medium immersion. Learning follows the Conwy Language Continuum, supporting pupils to progress naturally and confidently in their Welsh language development. Through Fflic a Fflac and Tric a Chlic, pupils build early phonics, listening skills, and secure foundations in spoken and written Welsh.

• Literacy and numeracy are taught in Welsh up to the Summer term of Year 2.
• Welsh vocabulary is developed through songs, stories, play, and structured teaching.
• Mixed-age learning allows younger pupils to absorb language patterns while older pupils strengthen their skills through modelling.

Afternoon Big Question

Afternoons are centred around Big Questions—engaging, open-ended topics designed to cover all Areas of Learning and Experience within the Curriculum for Wales. These sessions encourage curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

• Discussions take place in both Welsh and English to broaden pupils’ understanding of the world.
• Children explore science, expressive arts, humanities, health and wellbeing, and digital skills through hands-on, meaningful activities.
• Bilingual dialogue supports flexible thinking and strengthens pupils’ ability to express ideas confidently in both languages.

We aim to create a space where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired. Through play, exploration, and purposeful teaching, pupils develop resilience, independence, and a love of learning that will support them throughout their school journey.
